Exporting Your Notes

Your notes are just that – yours. They represent your invaluable time, effort, creativity, and intellectual property, and we believe you should be able to use them however you like, whenever you like.

With this in mind, we're excited to announce that you can now export your notes from Amplenote. Whether you want to store a backup copy, practice your own form of version control, or use your notes somewhere else, Amplenote has you covered.

linkHow do I export my notes?

First, you'll want to access the desktop version of Amplenote (it is not currently possible to export your notes on mobile). Navigate to www.amplenote.com and log into your account there, or click the app icon on your desktop if you have it installed.

Next, click the Settings icon in the bottom left corner of Amplenote:

On the Account Settings page, click the Import & Export tab:

On the Import & Export page, click the Start Export button:

Amplenote will ask to verify your account credentials, and then process your notes for export. This may take a little time, depending on how many notes and images you have.

Once the export is complete, Amplenote will send a ZIP file containing your notes to the email address registered with your account:

Alternatively, you can click to download the ZIP file directly from the Export history section of the Import & Export page:

The Export history section can also come in handy should you wish to revisit an older export of your notes.

* As a reminder, any notes that you have set to ‘Vault note’ protection will not be included in exports.

linkHow will my exported notes be formatted?

Each note will be exported in markdown format. Markdown is a simple format that can be used by a wide variety of plain text editors and markdown viewers.

Any images that have been uploaded to Amplenote will be included in the ZIP file, and your note metadata will be packaged into a YAML Front Matter section.

You can rest easy knowing that your notes are available for export at any time. As always, thanks for using Amplenote. Write on!

Plot twist

Thanks for stopping by the Amplenote blog. Did you know that the content of this "blog post" is just a plain old note, lifted from the author's Amplenote notebook? Rich footnotes, industry-leading to-do lists, and a security-first mindset make us a solid option for modern writers. Try it out yourself.

Are there ways to automate backups by using the files the app creates in our filesystem?
I'm pretty sure the process will be different for each OS if possible.
Thanks

No way to automate this yet (outside of maybe creating a Plugin that does this), but we are preparing the Desktop version of Amplenote, which will soon have the capability of reading and writing to the local file storage. So any solution of periodic backup could pick up from there (eg. by using a git repository on top of your notes folder or any other solution that backs up files automatically)
